Mercy starts off with an intriguing plot where a suspect has to prove himself innocent within 90 minutes of the ‘Mercy’ trial. I personally felt the AI integration into the judiciary system a promising plot point. The movie blends screen life format with real time Mercy trial which enhances the visual aspect of the film – the film becomes visually bizarre. What I most liked about this movie is – it’s whodunit thriller level start and the escalating stakes which gets unraveled throughout the film. The film engages us with the very ambiguity regarding the systems and the real murderer behind the curtains.
Even though, the movie doesn’t demand much, Chris Pratt as Chris Raven and Rebecca Ferguson as Judge Maddox ensures a smooth performance. The pacing is even but significantly reduces emotional impact as the movie doesn’t take it’s time to establish bonds and rather resorts to complicating stakes. The balance tips off towards the end when things become increasingly hard to understand or follow.
Overall, Mercy deserves your Mercy if you are a Sci-Fi person invested in narrative complexities rather than emotional stakes.
