M. Night Shyamalan’s new supernatural mystery thriller Remain is set to release around Valentine’s Day, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor in the lead roles.
The film is reportedly an adaptation of Nicholas Sparks and M. Night Shyamalan’s Remain, which went on to become a brief bestseller. The combination of Shyamalan’s penchant for supernatural mysteries and Sparks’ reputation for romance already makes the film an intriguing proposition.
The trailer, at least, seems to embrace both sides of that equation. It blends a supernatural mystery with a romantic storyline, creating an atmosphere that feels both emotionally intimate and unsettling. There are enough unanswered questions in the trailer to suggest that Shyamalan may have another mystery where the less you know going in, the better.
That said, the trailer can only promise so much. Whether Remain manages to balance its supernatural elements with its romance – without one overwhelming the other – remains to be seen.
