The 3 M’s of Thrillers

How 3 thrillers from different industries redefined the thriller space?

‘Thrillers are and have been a forever presence in Indian Cinema. The suspense drives us to the edge of the seat, and it is arguably one of the most winning genre in India. So here we are going in to dissect the recent 3 M’s of Thrillers. The thrillers are from different industries and they contribute to the redefinition of thriller space in that industry. Let’s dive in without further ado then!

  1. Maharaja (Tamil)

Maharaja is one of the films I decided to watch in theaters and undoubtedly it was one of the best experiences for me. Maharaja transitions from a very simple story to a compelling and slightly disturbing cinema, hats off to Nithilan Swaminathan for his true grit and determination and the effort he has poured into this screenplay it is no far from a masterpiece. Ajaneesh Loknath has done a serious role in elevating some sequences of the film as well as the songs are also well composed and placed.

2. Mohiniyattam (Malayalam)

Mohiniyattam also called Bharatanatyam 2 is a Malayalam Black Comedy Thriller set as a sequel to Bharatanatyam. We Know that Malayalee audience demands a lot from their film industry and the industry succeeds in delivering it. This is one such example. Unlike in the first part of this series, Mohiniyattam stands out for it’s black comedy execution. Blending Comedy into a thriller is walking through a tightrope but the makers decided to go on with it. The performances were all good, but I want to congratulate Baby Jean for such a show stealing performance. Music was on spot. And the Third act keeps you at the edge. Must watch if you like Black Comedy and thrillers.

3. Max (Kannada)

Max is a Kannada Action Thriller film starring Kiccha Sudeepa. Through this film Kannada industry has proven that they are not confined to cultural cinematic phenomenon and transcends their range over thrillers as well. Although this is a good thriller, there were some major shortcomings. The production quality is one such thing, some sequences specifically in third act sucks not because it was poorly written but it was not backed by funds. As if the funds were burnt halfway through the film. I wish if the climax act was perfect then this would have been one of the topmost recommendations from Kannada industry. A well thought intellectual thriller which I believe needs your attention. The music becomes the highlight here as well ( Ajaneesh Loknath)
