Orphan (2009): A Flawed, Phenomenal Thriller

Orphan (2009) is a psychological horror thriller that ditches supernatural monsters in favor of rooted human dread. The story follows a grieving mother recovering from a tragic stillbirth, whose family decides to adopt a young girl named Esther — a decision that quickly spirals into chaos.

The standout element of the film is unquestionably Isabelle Fuhrman. Delivering a phenomenal performance at just 10 years old, she commands the screen with a terrifying maturity. Coupled with strong technical direction and a slow-burn tension that peaks in the second half, the film manages to be genuinely creepy.

However, where Orphan falters is in its screenplay. The narrative frequently asks the audience to suspend disbelief past reasonable limits, relying on frustrating character decisions to push the plot forward. Furthermore, while the film’s major plot twist is certainly memorable, its execution feels overly sensationalized and distasteful at times.
